Student Disqualified From Exam After Receiving Assistance From God

EAP: Like many Year 12 students Mal Edwards attending Canterbury High was taking exams as part of the Higher School Certificate. However the Department of Education has a strict policy against cheating or receiving assistance during the exam. It was during his geology exam that the supervising teacher watching over the exam session, Janice Newman, noticed that Edwards was praying just after the start asking God to help him. Ms Newman asked Edwards to hand in his paper immediately and to leave the exam hall.

Ms Newman said, "If a student was found to be copying from a text book or googling during the exam I would have taken the same action. No student is allowed to receive an unfair advantage from outside sources. Exams are testing the student on his or her own merits. Clearly Mal has a friend in Jesus and was using that friendship for improper purposes. This puts students who are atheists or who worship less powerful gods at a distinct disadvantage."

For his part Edwards told EAP that "If the elect are not allowed the assistance of their elector then how can God's will be done? Us elected must be free to do what God wants. In fact, the elect have no other choice. How else can there be any freedom in the world if we are not so compelled? I will be appealing the decision to bar me."

The principal of the school, Mrs Hardcombe, fully supports the barring of Edwards. She said, "The school has written to Mr Edwards explaining that if he is to be allowed to continue taking his exams he must understand and comply with all conditions. No outside assistance is allowed during the conduct of an exam. We don't allow nepotism and neither do we allow other worldly assistance. Each student's work is strictly to be his or her own."

Mr Edwards will sit out the exams at home waiting for an appeal decision. He is praying for a favourable decision even though legal opinion is that getting God to sway a legal process could be akin to interfering with witnesses.

Reports from grieving relatives have confirmed the amazing recanting of his life long atheism of deceased comedian Dave Allen.
