Train Surfer for Jesus Dies a Grisly Death
EAP: Sydney Australia. Mark Wells, a born again missionary for Jesus, died on Monday in a bizarre accident loosely connected with his interest in witnessing for Christ. Wells was an avid train surfer and believed one way of turning the youth to Jesus was through high risk past times of the sort which had caused him problems in his youth.
Ted Holmes, the former parole officer for Mark Wells told EAP that Mark had been in trouble with drugs and petty crimes in his youth. He had had an attraction to high risk activity. He said "Mark was always an adrenaline junkie and that obsession always brought on the wrong side of the law from razor wire tightrope walking, base jumping, driving offences, drugs and alcohol. However in his only stint in prison he found Jesus and connected with his message. He was inspired to spread the gospel to troubled under privileged people like himself."
A fellow witness to the homeless youth of Sydney, Brian Porter, told EAP, "Mark found he could connect with youth by sharing their love of high risk sports. To this end he had started train surfing, balancing on the top of Sydney's trains dodging overhead wires and beams. It's not really a thing in Sydney but Mark was going to move to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where train surfing is a really big deal for those living in the favelas. Mark had taken to practising here in Australia before arriving in Brazil to get his technique down pat. His idea was train surfing for Jesus to save souls and change lives." When asked if this unusual way of witnessing and of saving lives was really what Jesus would do he replied, "God moves in mysterious ways."
It was on Monday that Mark Wells was surfing a North Shore line train as it entered the underground section and somewhere between Central and Wynyard Station his head was decapitated from its torso. As the train left Wynyard Station the separated head rolled down from the top of the carriage on to the platform below A passenger on the platform fainted. She was Beryl Murphy and she was treated at the station by an ambulance crew.
After the train left Wynyard it emerged from the tunnel on to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There the collateral damage continued. Dan Parker, a bridge climb tour leader, was leading 10 paying customers climbing the giant arch structure when the train passed under. He told EAP what happened. "A train was travelling below with a body laying prostrate to the top of one of the carriages without its head. One of our party threw up sending the vomited mass down hitting the window of one of the cars travelling on the main deck below obscuring the driver's view, causing a ten car pile up. It's all just so weird." The northbound lanes were closed for hours following the accident and traffic chaos ensued. The train was stopped at Milsons Point and passengers transferred to buses. Milsons Point Station was closed while body removal operations and accident investigations continued.
An inquest will be held into the death of Mark Wells.
